History and heritage

A banking-schooner town

Holyrood's early economy ran on the Labrador and Grand Banks fisheries, and on the fleet of 'bankers' that sailed from here — it was said you could once walk across North Arm harbour on the decks of schooners sheltering from weather.

Farms, then the railway

By the early 1800s residents were farming to reduce their dependence on the fishery, petitioning government for better roads to reach markets. The 1830s shoreline road connected the community to St. John's, the 1836 census records a school, and the railway of the 1880s put St. John's and Carbonear about an hour away by coach — reshaping the town's economy.
