What Harbour Grace is actually like

History and heritage

Founded in 1517 — and named for a French port

The town is thought to have taken its name from Havre de Grace (Le Havre), France. Channel Island fishermen were working these waters by the early 1500s, and by 1550 Harbour Grace was a thriving fishing community. The first known resident was Robert Tossey of Dartmouth, England, settled here in 1583.

Pirates and pioneering flights

Peter Easton — one of history's most successful pirates — established a fort at Harbour Grace in 1610, in the vicinity of today's museum. Three centuries later the town's airstrip put it on the map again: Amelia Earhart flew from Harbour Grace on her 1932 solo transatlantic crossing.

Worth seeing
  • Registered Heritage District covering the historic waterfront core
  • Conception Bay Museum, on the site associated with Peter Easton's fort
  • The Amelia Earhart airstrip and monument
  • Gord Pike's and W.A. Munn's published histories of the town

Spring

Icebergs come down close to shore along this stretch of the Baccalieu Trail.

Summer

Regatta week, trail season on Pirate's Path and Gibbet Hill, and long harbour evenings.

Harbour Grace real estate — questions Bob gets weekly

How much are houses in Harbour Grace?

Harbour Grace prices run about $140,000 to $480,000 in 2026 — one of the best price-per-sqft values on Conception Bay. Character homes with real bones start under $170k; renovated properties and new builds push into the $400s.

Is Harbour Grace a good place to invest?

Yes — Harbour Grace has one of the deepest inventories of Queen Anne, Second Empire, and Victorian architecture in Newfoundland, and it consistently trades at a discount to Bay Roberts. Renovation-and-hold and heritage STR conversions are the strongest plays.

What's the history of Harbour Grace?

One of the oldest ports in North America — the town was a major fishing and aviation hub (Amelia Earhart departed from here in 1932). That history shows up in the architecture, the Conception Bay Museum, and the SS Kyle down in the harbour.

How far is Harbour Grace from St. John's?

About 105 km — roughly a 70-minute drive via the TCH. Popular with buyers who want small-town charm and heritage architecture without giving up weekend access to St. John's.

Are there waterfront homes for sale in Harbour Grace?

Regularly, yes. The town wraps around a large protected harbour, and waterfront listings surface every few months. Bob can put you on his off-MLS pocket-listing alert for Harbour Grace waterfront specifically.
